Saint Guilhem le désertSaint-Guilhem the desert is a medieval village located in the valley of Verdus, in amont of Herault. It was located on the road which carries to Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle, Saint Guilhem created the monastery of Gellone there. In the VIIth century, Rhothilde de Gellone gived four children to Charles Martel, from which Aude of France who borned in 732 and whose was born from its union with Thierry Ist of Autun, three sons, among them Guillaume de Gellone to whom returned the field. In 804, Guillaume melts the abbey of Gellone, which became with at its death the abbey of Saint-Ghilhem on May 28th 812. A relic of a piece of the cross attracted the pilgrims of Saint-Jacob there. |
